CLASH and Pioneer DJ continue our ‘For The Love Of It’ series documenting our favourite homegrown spinners, this time with 2020 Oram Award Winner NikNak flexing on the PLX-1000 turntables, DJM-S7 mixers, VM-80 monitors and HDJ-CX headphones provided graciously by Pioneer DJ.
NikNak – real name Nicole Raymond – is a powerhouse in her own right, having delivered scintillating sets at Wilderness, Bestival and We Out Here. A Worldwide FM resident, a member of both TC and the Groove Family and Eve’s Drop collective, NikNak also hosts ‘The Narrative’ podcast series spotlighting black female and femme expression in music.
She regularly displays a killer curatorial edge in her sets, be it a mix of dub delays and echoes on her ambient-inspired album ‘Bashi’ or a breezy groove-inspired mix for her residency – routinely bridging disparate sounds with her roots as a hip-hop head. She’s collaborated with household names Grandmaster Flash, Princess Nokia, Akala and Madlib, while cementing herself as a musical stalwart on the UK dance scene.
Previously, Capital Dance broadcaster and producer DJ Jess Bays. techno specialist and label head Charlie Tee and Subtle Radio resident Scar Duggy shared their respective journeys. Now, we bring you the turntable sorcery of NikNak who details her come-up and fashions a transatlantic mix – filmed at the Clash studio – moving fluidly from soulful rap to neo soul to sun-dappled house, an adrenaline rush to usher in the languid head of summer.
