Listen to Thundercat team with Damon Albarn and company for the first time.
Gorillaz shared a new single, “Cracker Island.” Mastermind Damon Albarn tapped Thundercat (Stephen Bruner) as the latest Gorillaz collaborator on the new track.
“Cracker Island,” Gorillaz first release of 2022, appears to be part of a mysterious new project from Albarn and his virtual cohorts — Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D. Gorillaz have been cryptically inviting fans to join “The Last Cult.”
“The world’s biggest virtual band have relocated to Silverlake, California,” press materials for the new single noted, “where it turns out that the answer to life’s question – the one truth to fix the world – is to invite fans to join ‘The Last Cult,’ with Murdoc as its self-appointed Great Leader.”
“It’s nice to be back, I’m well into our new tune,” 2D added, “it brings back weird and scary memories of stuff that hasn’t happened yet.”
Along with the Thundercat contributions, “Cracker Island” also features production work from Greg Kurstin (Foo Fighters, Adele) and frequent Gorillaz collaborator Remi Kabaka Jr. While the single “Cracker Island” recently arrived, Damon Albarn and company — with a virtual Thundercat in tow — unveiled the song live at their 2022 world tour kickoff in Montevideo, Uruguay on April 28.
