Jack Johnson today unveiled “Meet The Moonlight,” the title track from his forthcoming studio album along with a video directed by Morgan Maassen. Meet The Moonlight is due out on June 24 via Brushfire Records/Republic Records.
Produced by Blake Mills, the 10-song Meet The Moonlight marks the singer-songwriter’s eighth studio album and first in five years. Johnson and Mills collaborated on the material with Blake contributing various instrumentation to the music including steel drums, Moog synth and fretless guitar. The pair’s work is described in press materials as “an intimate and highly experimental process that involved embedding Johnson’s elegantly stripped-back arrangements with enchanting sonic details.” Jack Johnson, who previously previewed the LP with lead single “One Step Ahead,” will soon embark on an extensive North American tour in support of Meet The Moonlight.
Mills referred to the gorgeous “Meet The Moonlight” as “one of the most spiritually interesting things I’ve ever worked on.” As the title implies, Jack was inspired by the late-night sky. “Whenever I walk outside at night and look up at the stars, it’s always a way to be present instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on the past,” explained Johnson.
“There’s a chord in the song that wasn’t part of the initial composition; it happened by mistake when we were first playing it. In the end we kept it, because what that chord suggested was all the mystery,” added Mills. “To me it represents the whole process of us finding a common ground and working together to keep all those little idiosyncrasies tucked into the mix.”
