Listen To Grateful Dead Perform ‘Althea’ At Madison Square Garden In 1981

The Grateful Dead unveiled official audio of “Althea” from their March 9, 1981 concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. “Althea” was shared to preview the upcoming box set, In And Out Of The Garden: Madison Square Garden ‘81, ‘82, ‘83.

Due out on September 23, In And Out Of The Garden: Madison Square Garden ‘81, ‘82, ‘83 includes unreleased audio from six concerts recorded at MSG between 1981 and 1983. In addition to March 9, 1981, the set also features shows played at the famed arena on March 10, 1981; September 20 and 21, 1982 and October 11 and 12, 1983. In And Out Of The Garden is available for pre-order via Dead.net. The collection is limited to 12,500 individually numbered sets and comes housed in a package with liner notes written by acclaimed journalist David Fricke and artwork from Dave Van Patten.

“Althea” was played second by the Grateful Dead at MSG on March 9, 1981 following a performance of “Feel Like A Stranger.” The band’s lineup at the time consisted of guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Brent Mydland and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. A 3-CD set and digital download focusing solely on the March 9, 1981 concert also arrives on September 23.
