Mocht je toevallig last hebben van een slechte dag, dan is het altijd een goed idee om naar Vance Joy te luisteren. In 2013 leerden we de zeer goedlachse jongeman kennen met de wereldwijde hit “Riptide“. Vanaf dat moment ging het hard voor de Australiër. In 2014 kwam zijn doorbraakalbum Dream Your Live Away uit en speelde hij op onwijs veel plekken op de wereld. Daarna moesten we even geduld hebben voor een nieuw album, maar uiteindelijk was daar Nation For Two. Ook deze plaat werd met open armen ontvangen door de fans en critici. Hij tourde met dit album langs de grote en kleine zalen in de wereld en toverde een grote glimlach op hun gezicht. En dat Vance houdt van tijd nemen, lijkt inmiddels een feit, want opnieuw moesten we even wachten op nieuwe muziek.
Eerst kregen we in de lente van 2021 “Missing Piece” te horen en dat maakte ons al enigszins gelukkig. In Februari kwam daar het geheel anders klinkende “Don’t Fade” bij. Deze klonk dan weer wat rustiger dan het eerdere werk. Nu is daar een derde puzzelstukje in de vorm van “Clarity”. Deze derde single klink gelukkig al een stuk opgewekter, want we begonnen ons al zorgen te maken. Ook dit past weer als een jas: een vrolijk indiepopgeluid dat perfect in het straatje ligt van de eerdere albums. “Clarity” gaat over het feit dat je jezelf even kan verliezen in de tijd. Joy schreef het nummer na een Halloweenfeestje dat hij samen met Joel Little organiseerde. Die laatste werkte overigens ook al samen met Lorde, Taylor Swift en Olivia Rodrigio. Het nummer begint rustig met de typische akoestische gitaar die we kennen van Vance Joy, maar wanneer de drums erbij komen bloeit het nummer open tot een zeer dansbaar geheel. Vooral de blazers maken het helemaal af in het refrein, en doen je meedeinen met de muziek. Zeker naar het einde toe betrappen we ons zelf op een grote smile. De finale is dan ook echt een feestje om naar te luisteren.
Met “Clarity” heeft Vance Joy alle elementen die hij in de afgelopen jaren heeft gebruikt in een nummer gepropt en echt niet zeer onverdienstelijk. Op 10 juni 2022 zal het nieuwe album In Our Sweet Time verschijnen.
