The Afghan Whigs announced their first studio album in five years, How Do You Burn?, due out via Royal Cream/BMG on September 9. The rockers also shared new single, “The Getaway,” and announced Fall 2022 tour dates in the U.S. and Europe.

The new record follows the band led by Greg Dulli’s 2017 LP, In Spades. The title for How Do You Burn? came from Dulli’s friend and collaborator, Mark Lanegan, who sadly died on February 22, 2022. “It was Mark who named the album,” Dulli said.

Lanegan — who collaborated with Dulli in Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins — makes his Afghan Whigs debut on the album he named. Lanegan sang backing vocals on two tracks before he passed.

How Do You Burn? was largely recorded during the pandemic with Afghan Whigs members contributing remotely from different locales. Dulli, co-producer Christopher Thorn and drummer Patrick Keeler recorded from California while bassist John Curley, guitarist Jon Skibic and strings specialist Rick Nelson contributed from Cincinnati, New Jersey and New Orleans respectively.

While the remote recording offered challenges, the band quickly adapted to the format. “Once we got the system down, we started flying,” Dulli added. Along with Lanegan, How Do You Burn? also features guest spots from past Whigs collaborators Susan Marshall, Van Hunt and Marcy Mays.

The Afghan Whigs, however, go it alone on lead single “The Getaway.” Watch the official music video directed by Philip Harder and Patrick Pierson below:

Afghan Whigs will perform an intimate show at Gold Diggers in Los Angeles this weekend before kicking off a previously announced spring run in Florida next week. The band’s newly announced Fall 2022 tour dates begin on September 9 (same day the album is out) in Minneapolis and will then hit major markets in the Midwest, Northeast, The South, Texas, Colorado and the West Coast. The U.S. tour wraps up in Los Angeles on October 12 before the band heads to Europe for the second time in 2022.

Tickets for The Afghan Whigs fall tour dates go on sale to the general public on Friday, May 6.
